Chautauqua Beach is an area of St. Augustine Beach that encompasses A Street and the numbered streets up to 11th Street. The area became incorporated as the City of St. Augustine Beach in 1959, but was once called "Summer Chautauqua" in the early 1900s and then Chautauqua Beach. The area was a playground for the prominent, many of whom have embedded their names in history. It was also part of a pocket of culture named after the Chautauqua adult education movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The movement spread throughout rural America until the mid- 1920s bringing entertainment and culture to small communities with speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, preachers, and specialists of the day. Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is "the most American thing in America."
Today Chautauqua Beach is in the midst of all that is happening at St. Augustine Beach including restaurants, shopping, and the vibrant activity that living in a small town surf city encompasses. With cottages, ranch homes, newly constructed green homes, and ocean front homes there is a wide variety to choose from in order to make this welcoming neighborhood your permanent home of beach get away. Shhhhhh....... don't let this little secret out!
